What the alert levels mean
Level 5 (Evacuate) and Level 4 (Evacuation of elderly people etc.) concern residential areas; Level 3 (Do not approach the volcano) and Level 2 (Do not approach the crater) restrict access to the mountain or crater area; Level 1 means ‘Note that this is an active volcano’. Volcanoes without alert levels receive warnings such as ‘danger near the crater’ instead.

Method
We read JMA’s current volcanic warning data and list of active volcanoes. For each volcano we show the latest item of the type ‘eruption warning/forecast (target volcano)’. Volcanoes not present in that data are shown with an eruption forecast (Level 1 where alert levels are operated). Warning names are translated by this site; the Japanese original is authoritative.
About this page
Japan has 111 active volcanoes. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issues eruption warnings and, for about 50 volcanoes, volcanic alert levels from 1 to 5. This page shows which warnings are in effect now.
